Winter Holiday

Raven stood outside on the small porch of her family’s home. The dark night sky was decorated with a million tiny silver lights that twinkled brightly and the full moon’s soft glow blanketed the world around her. She sighed and stepped off the porch to take a nighttime walk. She dug her hands deep into the pockets of her heavy coat. Soft snow crunched underneath her every step. She needed to get away for a bit. The holiday began to suffocate her. She thought she would be gone, returned to her small apartment and roommate back in sunny California but, December came and still she remained here in her hometown. As she walked along the dark street of her neighborhood, she contemplated the reason why she chose to stay and not leave once November came. She stopped at the edge of the sidewalk and looked around, no cars. She crossed and continued her contemplative walk.

The houses she passed were decorated for the Christmas season. Lots of colorful twinkle lights and yard decorations; reindeer with red noses, jolly Santas, and colorful snowmen, littered yards and roofs. She gave passing glances and shook her head. She didn’t hate the holiday per se, but this time of year has always been hard for her to enjoy. Raven hasn’t enjoyed Christmas in years, not since her mother passed, that’s when the holiday lost its magic. The season only brought back bitter memories and tears. She stopped again at the edge of another sidewalk, only the stillness of the night was all that surrounded her. Raven had paid no attention to where she had wandered and found herself near a small park that was a popular hangout for the local youths. She crossed the street and made her way to the park. She found a lone bench and took a seat. The park was decorated with dozens of twinkling lights. They snaked around the posts and trees and a small nativity scene was set up near some vandalized water fountains and a public restroom. She sighed and buried her face in her coat. The black and purple coat looked two sizes too big for her, she practically disappeared in it, but it was warm and kept the breeze from chilling her.

She sat there for a while, alone. Alone with her thoughts. “Maybe I should have just left.” “I know how dad gets…” “But Racheal…” “I wish. I wish…” “And what is a lone raven doing perched on a bench, so late at night?” a soft, cool voice spoke from behind her. She jerked her head around and saw Him standing there. Odin. He was dressed in His usual blacks with the exception of a heavy oaken colored coat. The moonlight made His mercury-colored locks glow against the dark sky, His ocean eye shined brightly. He stood there with a small smile; His gaze focused on Raven. She sighed and turned her head away “I just needed some air.” Odin took a seat next to her. He knew she was lying, or at the very least, half-lying. “I can tell there is more bothering you little bird. Would you care to talk about it?” He asked smoothly. Raven thought for a moment. She did want to talk but she wasn’t sure how to say it. She turned to speak but Odin’s smile caught her off guard and she lost her train of thought. She began to blush and hid her face in her oversized coat again. Odin let a chuckle escape His lips and Raven peeked out from her coat. Her hands were still buried in her pockets, she tried to find something in her empty coat pocket to distract her. Odin scooted closer to her and wrapped one arm around her waist and held her close.

Odin was the only one who could throw her so far off balance that she’d surely fall over if she were standing. She was always so unsure of everything, of herself, her decisions. But if there was one thing, she was sure of, it was that she had fallen so deeply in love with Him that there was no coming back. But even as aware as she was, she struggled to admit it openly. The closeness she felt with Him seemed like a fantasy. She had only known Him for a year or so and couldn’t imagine her life without Him in it. She knew if anyone could make this gloomy and miserable holiday bearable, it would be Him. Raven finally stopped fidgeting in her pockets and tried in vain to sink further into her coat. Odin pulled the neck of her coat down. “What has you all flustered, little bird?” His words made Raven turn a deeper red. She took a deep breath in and tried to compose herself. Odin was the only one that could reduce Raven into a babbling mess. “I-I just n-needed to get some air.” She finally stuttered out. Odin chuckled quietly “I know, you have already stated as such.” Raven raised her head a bit more from the coat “oh, right.” She felt even sillier now. Her shoulders drooped, and a melancholic sigh escaped her “It’s the holiday. I used to love Christmas but… I just don’t feel like it this year…” she paused and then leaned into Odin “but I have to pretend I’m enjoying Christmas, for dad and Joanna. If I don’t, well… I’ll never hear the end of it.” She buried her face in Odin’s chest.

He stroked her hair with His free hand. “My little bird, you need not feign happiness for those that revel in another’s sorrow.” Raven shook her head “I don’t think they’re happy that I’m so depressed, but they certainly don’t care about how I feel.” Raven brought one hand over and rested it on Odin’s lap. “I should’ve left after October but when Racheal said she needed help with her new shop, I couldn’t just leave.” Odin said nothing and let Raven speak. “I called Jayna, and she was happy that I was staying longer.” Odin raised an eyebrow “she was happy?” He questioned. Raven laughed softly “she’s under the impression that I’m getting along with the family. She said that I needn’t worry about rent as her father agreed to pay my half while I was away…Jayna’s father has acted more like a father than my own.” She looked up at Odin “he actually taught me how to drive, he even took care of me when I got the flu one year; I was sicker than a dog. He even called because he was worried that I wasn’t eating enough and was worried that my depression might have gotten worse because of the approaching holiday. And then Jayna is like a sister to me. She even introduces me as her sister, her father says that I’m his other daughter, it’s so weird how these people that have only known me for three years treat me like I’m their family.” Raven was on the verge of tears. Odin gently wiped away some tears that had fallen and kissed the top of her head “My little bird, it seems that these people truly love you. You are torn between wanting to help your family here and wanting to return home to your family there.” He said plainly. Raven looked up wide-eyed at Odin “family?” He smiled “yes, family.” He gently gripped her chin and held it “family is not always blood. I’m sure you have heard the favorite human proverb “Blood is thicker than water.” She nodded “but humans do not quote it in its entirety. Rather unfortunate because it is a proverb that I quite like. The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” Raven tilted her head and a small smile formed on her lips. She understood exactly what it meant. The realizing smile made Odin let go of her chin. “Odin, I…” she began but was interrupted by a soft, sweet kiss. She closed her eyes and let it happen.

They parted and she smiled. Odin always knew what to say, He always had words of advice and kindness. It both felt so good and so odd having Him by her side and from time to time her mind would wander and imagine what He was like before they met, before He found her. She had read many stories on “War God” Odin and whatever she knew of Him came from those old stories. But there was always that urge to just ask Him what it was like, what kind of world He was from. But whenever His past was brought up, He quickly shied away or would come up with some vague explanation. But one thing was apparent, the sadness in His eye. So, she would avoid the subject, unless there was another around. And He seemed to like bringing up old wounds. A breeze stirred and Raven shivered, the breeze bit at her nose and cheeks. Odin let her go and stood “perhaps it’s time for you to return home?” He said quietly. Raven looked up, nodded and sighed “I guess so. It feels pretty late.” He extended a hand “shall I accompany you home?” She smiled and took it, and the couple began to make their way back to her home. As they walked Raven took a hold of His arm, which made the God smile.

After a short walk they finally arrived at her home. They shared one more kiss outside the door. As Odin departed Raven grasped at His arm. Her face was wrought with anxiety and sadness. “Odin, please…will You stay. Just for tonight?” Her voice was small. Odin had other plans, there was much that He had to prepare for, for the coming solstice. Even though Ragnarök had already occurred, and He was stuck in an infinite loop of repeat, there were still duties and traditions that He still needed to carry out. But unknown to Raven, she had an unusual hold over Him. A hold that went back even before she breathed her first. He relented “well, just for tonight. I shall depart when the sun rises.” He spoke quietly. Raven gripped Him around the waist in a tight hug “thank you.” She let Him go and turned to unlock the door. She realized that all the lights were off. She was relieved that everyone had finally gone to bed. She quietly opened the door and went inside, and Odin followed her in. She shut the door and the clicking sound of the lock made her hold her breath. She was sure that the sound would wake everyone. Odin chuckled at her reaction, and she shot back an annoyed scowl. She motioned for Him to follow her. They went up the stairs and made their way to her bedroom.

She sighed in relief as she flopped down on the bed. She took off her coat and threw it on a nearby chair. Odin sat on the opposite side of the bed. “Um, could You turn Your head?” she asked. Her voice shook. Odin raised an eyebrow “turn My head?” Raven nodded “I want to change…” her voice trailed off. A mischievous smile rose to His lips “little bird, you know that I’ve seen all of you. And I quite like what I usually see.” Raven practically squeaked and threw a pillow at Him. “You are such a perv sometimes!” Raven still wanted to know what He liked so much about her. She was nothing special. She wasn’t beautiful, didn’t have the body of a goddess, scars had littered her back. She was so stumped as to why He even looked her way. “Hmm. You have that look on your face again little bird.” Raven snapped from her thoughts “um, w-what look?” she asked. He stood and walked around the bed and pulled her close to Him, His hands fell to her hips. He chuckled softly “That look when you start to question why I’m here, with you.” Raven shrank. He was right. He was usually right. She gave a playful scoff and turned to face Him. She wore a small smile and fell back on the bed and pulled Odin down on top of her.

After she realized what she had done, she released Him. He was lying on top of her. Odin pushed Himself up and hovered over her. He smiled and took this as an invitation and closed the gap between their lips. She returned His kiss and brought her arms up to hug His neck. They finally broke apart “Odin…why?” He already knew what she was going to ask, and He silenced her with a single finger. “My little bird. You already know the answer to the question you are about to ask.” She shook her head “I’m sorry, I just feel as if…as if…” her voice trailed off. A lump formed in her throat, and she was unable to finish. Odin chuckled softly “as if I made a mistake in choosing you? That I somehow have you mistaken for someone else? That you have no business with Me?” He caressed her cheek “Raven, there is more to you than you will ever know. One day you will see.” Raven shivered at His words. She had heard them before but for some reason this time they sent a chill through her. Odin removed Himself off her, and she sat up. Her heart pounded in her chest. She stared at Him with a mixture of confusion and familiarity, something about this scene felt familiar to her. Odin caught her expression and for a moment, a split second He felt as if the universe gave back His treasured little bird, His Muninn. Raven shook her head “Odin…wha..” His expression dropped and she clearly saw the sorrow that had invaded His features. “Odin, what was that?” she asked. The feeling. There was a feeling that she had done this very thing before. Just in a different place or maybe a different time.

He turned His head from her. Clearly there was something He was hiding from her. Something like this must have happened before. Raven quickly left the bed and threw her arms around His neck and hugged Him. Tears fell and she had no idea why. It felt as if someone else was in control. There were thoughts that raced through her mind, and she was sure that many were not her own, at least they did not feel like it. He returned the embrace and held her close. He was sure that His little bird had returned to Him but when they broke apart, He was met with Raven’s lonely eyes. But for a moment He thought He was standing with His precious familiar. Raven knew that something bothered Him. “Odin, I…I know I’m not the one You really want..” Her eyes were filled with tears. Odin silenced her with another kiss, she pulled away from Him. “I can feel someone else. Sometimes it feels as if I’m not in control of my own body. I feel it moves on its own. Then there are times that some thoughts are not mine.” Odin’s eye widened and He whispered a name. She heard it and repeated it “Muninn” she said in a low broken voice. And for the first time since they met, she saw His face light up, truly. No false smile, it was a genuine smile, and this made her heart flutter. She had never seen Him smile like that before. He held her cheeks gently “My little bird, do you remember?  Remember your past, who you once were?” He asked softly. Raven contemplated His question for a moment then sighed “maybe. But the name Muninn has echoed in my mind more than once. I just never knew what to make of it.” Odin held her tighter, and something made her press herself into Him and hang on to Him tightly. It felt as if she had to cling to Him or she’d lose Him forever.

They finally separated “I think I should go to bed. Will You come with me?” Raven asked. Odin smiled and nodded. She left Him and took her nightdress that hanged from a nearby hook. Odin raised an eyebrow at the dress. It was a short sheer red dress. He never expected her to own such a piece of clothing, it actually piqued His curiosity. What else did He not know about her? She removed her clothes; He kept watching and she never turned. She tossed the day’s clothing into a nearby basket. She retrieved a fresh pair of underwear from her dresser. He cleared His throat when she dropped the panties she wore to the floor. She paused for a moment before slowly kneeling and picking them up, then tossed them into the basket. Odin crossed His arms; He had a sneaking suspicion that her intent was to tease Him. He had enough and approached her from behind and gripped her waist and rested His chin on her shoulder “Oh, sweet little bird. Are you perhaps taunting Me with this little show? Your actions feel… Deliberate.” A small breathless giggle escaped her lips. His hands traveled from her waist up to her breasts and He gently cupped them in His hands. He whispered into her ear “shall I keep you warm, little bird?” He used His thumbs to massage her nipples. She dropped her night dress to the floor. A soft moan escaped her. He continued His massage and began kissing her neck. She smiled and sighed, she let herself fall deeper into His touch. One hand left her breast and moved downward past her waist to her lips. He slid two fingers inside her. He tickled and teased her until she couldn’t stand it anymore. She broke from Him and turned; she began undoing the buttons of His top. He threw off His coat as she continued to work on His top. He thought this was such an amusing sight, then aided her in the removal of His top. She moved in for a kiss and He met her halfway. She was unusually aggressive tonight and He found that to be both delightful and arousing. He broke away from her and scooped her up in His arms and carried her to the bed and laid her down. She gripped His wrist and pulled the God down on top of her. He laughed as He fell on her. Raven reached for her light on the nightstand and turned it off. The darkness that blanketed the room gave the two lovers the privacy for their intimate play.

Raven awoke and lifted her head from the pillow and looked over to the clock on her desk. The bright red digits read 3:44. Her bedroom window was iced over, nothing could be seen through it, not even the sky. She sat up and looked over at the body that lay next to her and pulled the blanket down a little and revealed a peacefully sleeping Odin. She gazed at His slumbering face and smiled. There were times when she thought everything that she had experienced was just the product of a hallucination or a very vivid dream. But Odin would always find ways to remind her that this was reality. She reached out and gently caressed His cheek. This made a sweet smile form on His lips. She laid back down and cuddled up as close as she could to Him. She always wanted to be around Him, she never wished to be apart from Him for very long. As soon as she was settled next to Him, He instinctively reached around and held her close. Tears formed in her eyes, and she smiled and soon drifted off to sleep. She woke again and this time found herself alone in her bed. He kept His word and left as soon as day broke. She glanced over at the clock, and it read 7:05. She sat up and sighed sadly at the empty place in her bed. She got up and pulled on a robe, grabbed some clean clothing and started her routine. First a nice warm shower, then her teeth and hair and finally some light makeup. As she left the bathroom the smell of maple and vanilla hit her nose and she smiled. “Is that pancakes or waffles?”  she thought to herself. It was a smell that brought back familiar and happier holiday childhood memories. She hurried downstairs and found her father in the kitchen cooking.

Her face lit up. It was as if she were viewing a scene from the past. Her father was making breakfast. She glanced over at the counter and found a stack of pancakes. They looked so fluffy and perfect that she had to resist the urge to go over and steal a whole one! “I haven’t seen you make these since mom died. It’s nice.” He didn’t answer and she approached the island counter and sat on a stool. Her father turned holding a plate of sausage “I thought the girls would like these.” he said cheerfully. “Oh, are Joanna’s nieces here today?” Raven asked. Her father nodded “they are. You would know if you actually spent more time here at home.” Raven’s smile faded. “I didn’t think you’d want any, so I made enough for us. If I recall you don’t eat breakfast anyways.” he said flatly. Raven went cold. She held her rising urge to scream at him. She had nothing against Joanna’s nieces, in fact she got along pretty well with them. It was Joanna and the way her father had begun to act after he met her. That was where Raven’s issue lied. She had had enough. She let out a loud exasperated sigh and stood from her seat and marched from the kitchen. “Where are you going Erin?” her father called after her. Without turning she said “out” she went to her room, grabbed her jacket and left the house. She walked quickly down the sidewalk. It was a grey day. No sun, just dark clouds that hid the blue winter sky. She made her way into town. She didn’t know where she was going, she just walked. Tears stained her frozen cheeks. When she finally stopped, she was in front of an antique shop. Wanting to get away from the cold she slipped inside. Her nose was bombarded with the smell of dust, must, and a hint of cinnamon? The store was small and soft Christmas music played over the speakers. It wasn’t long before a kind old woman greeted her with a cheery “Merry Christmas!” Raven smiled and waved as she passed by. She stopped towards the back of the store and just stood there. She needed some time to think. She looked over the shelves that held some very old-looking angel statues. She wrinkled her nose at them. “Can I help you with something dearie?” the old woman asked kindly. Raven shook her head and the old woman waved “well if you need me, I’ll be at the counter.” Raven lingered in the corner until she heard a voice call her name from behind. She spun around and saw that it was Loki or “Russell” Russell was the alias that Loki used when He would mingle with the humans.

Raven flashed a brief smile and turned away from Him. Loki frowned. “Hey!” He exclaimed and reached for her shoulder and turned her to face Him. Raven’s face was soaked with tears. Loki’s expression softened “hey, are you ok Birdie?” She shrugged. Loki narrowed His bright green eyes. “I detect lies.” He said comically. The old woman approached again “are you looking for gifts?” she asked. Loki turned around and stared down at her “well, maybe. We’re just looking for now.” He said politely, with a smile. The old woman nodded and went back to her counter. Loki turned back to Raven but she was gone. She snuck away while He was talking to the elderly shopkeeper. He looked all around the store, but she was nowhere to be found. He went to the counter and asked the old lady where His friend went. She pointed to the door and said she saw the young lady leave as they spoke. Loki thanked the woman and left to pursue His friend who He was worried for. Loki pulled His dark coat around Him and started to walk. He only walked for a few minutes before He finally found Her. He saw her through a window of an small diner, she sat alone. He went inside and took a seat at the booth with her. She hid her face from Him with the hood of her coat. “Hey, Birdie. What going on?” Loki asked gently. She remained silent. A waitress came over to the table. She was bright and wore a cheery smile. She placed some menus on the table “My name’s Sandy and I’ll be your waitress today. Now, what can I get‘cha  started with? Something to drink?” she asked. Loki smiled at the woman and replied “hot chocolate if you, have it? You want anything Birdie? I’m paying.” Raven sat in silence still. “Uh, how about two hot chocolates?” Sandy nodded “we do have hot chocolate.” she glanced at Raven “you want extra marshmallows hun?” Loki nodded “I think we’d like that, right Birdie?” Sandy smiled and took the drink order and left.

Loki reached across the table and gently grasped one of Raven’s exposed hands. She didn’t move. “Birdie. You can talk to Me. What’s going on?” Raven finally pulled her hood down and Loki saw that her face was red and soaked with tears. She tried to speak but the lump that had formed in her throat made it almost impossible. Loki reached for some napkins and leaned over to wipe her face and nose. “Oh, come on Rave, can’t have boogers running down your face, now, can we?” Loki tried His best to get her to at least smile. Raven took the napkins and blew her nose. “Why, why do You h-have to do things like that?” she asked. Loki only smiled. Sandy brought their hot chocolates. Both were piled high with tiny white marshmallows. She sat the cups down “ok, two hot chocolates with extra marshmallows. Do you know what you both want to order?” Loki glanced down at the menu “uh, could you give us a few more minutes?” Sandy winked and smiled “sure thing hun, I’ll be around in 10, ‘kay?” Loki gave a thumbs up and the waitress left. “Ok, since you can talk again. What’s got you so upset? Especially this time of year? Humans are always so happy during this season.” He said as He looked around the festive decked diner. Raven took in a breath and tried to give an abridged version of why this time of the year was hard for her and what had happened that morning between her and her father. Loki leaned back in the booth “Birdie, Raven, I’m sorry. I had no idea. I thought Grim had done something thoughtless again.” He spoke. Raven giggled “No, Odin has been nothing but kind to me.” she said. Loki thought for a moment, rubbed His chin and lightly tugged on His fiery goatee. The wheels in His head turned. Raven finally felt herself calm down. She looked down at the cup of hot chocolate and smiled “This reminds me of when my…” her voice became strained, and tears began to fall again. Loki stopped His pondering “Aw, Birdie, I didn’t want to make you cry more.” She shook her head “No, this is a happy memory. It reminds me of when my friend Jayna took me to a restaurant one year for Christmas dinner. Her dad’s flight got canceled and he didn’t make it to cook dinner. So, we went to a restaurant. The first thing she did was order hot chocolate.” Loki smiled “this Jayna, mean a lot to you?” He asked. Raven nodded “It’s silly, I’ve only known her for three years, but it feels a lot longer than that.” Raven’s face darkened again “it also makes me so mad that someone I only knew for a short time, knows more, cares more about me than someone that I’ve known for my whole life. Twenty-eight years, and my dad doesn’t even care enough to know me.” Loki raised an eyebrow “well I do recall the frantic text messages and calls he makes when you come in late. Remember October? I think he does care.” Raven snorted “No, Loki that’s not why. If my dad is not in control, he will absolutely lose it. He reminds me of…” She trailed off. She fought back a flood of unpleasant memories. She shook her head as if she was trying to erase them.

“Jess never calls him. She calls me first, then talks me into doing or asking dad for, whatever. She’s the reason I even came back to this fucking town.” Raven’s tone was dark. Loki flicked a fallen marshmallow at her “well if you didn’t come back here. You would have never met Grim, or Me.” He said with a cheeky smile. Raven rolled her eyes and a small smile rose to her lips. “I guess so.” she whispered. Sandy came back around “so darlins’ you know what you want?” she asked. Loki flipped the menu over and without looking pointed to a random listing. He read it off “I will take the Lumberjack Haul, and can I get extra whipped cream and sprinkles. Please?” Sandy laughed heartily “aw, aint’cha the cutest? Ya lucky you a redhead.” she winked playfully at Loki. She turned to Raven “and what’cha having sweetie?” Raven looked over the menu quickly, flipping it at least twice. “Um, can I get the Grits bowl with fruit?” Sandy smiled “sure thing hun. So, I have one Lumberjack Haul with extra whipped cream and sprinkles for Red and I have the Grits bowl with fruit for the sweet lil’ mouse. Is there anything else?” she asked. Loki glanced at Raven, and she shook her head “That’s all Sandy.” The waitress took the menus “I’ll go put that in, and if ya’ll need anything just give me a holler.” Loki smiled and nodded.

“Sweet little mouse. That’s cute.” Loki grinned. Raven was confused “what’s that supposed to mean?” she asked. Loki said nothing and held His grin. Loki could switch from wholesome goofball to annoying donkey at the drop of a hat. “You know, I heard a rumor that you “squeak” when you…” Raven turned red and threw a handful of marshmallows at Him. A few got tangled in His long red hair. “Who started that rumor!” she demanded, embarrassed. Loki laughed “I’m kidding, I’m kidding!” He paused “It was Odin.” Raven wanted to reach over the table and yank His braids out of His head. “You’re lying! Odin wouldn’t…He-He wouldn’t.” What Loki thought would have been a funny joke turned sour. “Hey, hey, Birdie. You, ok? I was joking, I swear. Odin didn’t say anything. I was just playing up the mouse thing.” Raven looked down at her cup of cocoa and went silent. Loki sighed sadly “I’m sorry.” Raven shook her head “No, no. I’m sorry. You didn’t know. I mean how could You know.” she finally spoke. Loki tilted His head “do you want to talk about it?” He asked kindly. She shook her head “not really, but I just don’t like it when people lie about other people to me, even if it’s a joke. Something bad happened the last time someone did that…” she trailed off. “You got hurt?” He finished. Raven looked up and nodded. “Ok, Birdie, I won’t use that as a joke anymore, promise.” He smiled. Sandy approached the table holding a large round tray. She sat it down and Loki began to drool over His plate of food. “Alright, one Lumberjack Haul for the charming redhead and one bowl of fruit grits for the sweet lil’ mouse.” she said cheerfully as she served the two. “I hope you enjoy.” and she left to tend to other tables. Loki licked His lips as He took in the sight of His breakfast plate or rather platter would be a better word. It was piled with seven or eight soft, fluffy pancakes that were topped with warm melted butter, oozing syrup and a large dallop of whipped cream decorated with rainbow sprinkles. Next to the mountain of flapjacks sat two perfectly cooked fried eggs, at least four strips of crispy bacon, a few links of beautifully browned sausage and a pile of bronzed hashbrowns. On a smaller plate that was brought out held two golden muffins and a bowl of extra whipped topping for the pancakes. Loki salivated over His breakfast feast. Raven giggled at the sight of Loki; it looked as He were ready to dive into the plate face first. Loki looked up and caught the giggling woman and picked up the biggest spoon there and began to heap His extra cream onto the pancakes. Raven looked down at her bowl. It was such a cute sight, the way the fruit was arranged on the honey-colored porridge. The sliced strawberries lined the edge of the bowl followed by a ring of small blackberries and a small mound of blueberries sat in the center. She was surprised at how delicate the bowl looked; one wouldn’t expect this from a twenty-four-hour diner. She picked up her spoon and scooped up a spoonful to taste. She smiled and hummed happily as she ate.

Loki smiled, a goofy pancake-packed smile. His cheeks bulged a little and whipped cream speckled His lips. Raven didn’t see this, but if she had, she would have laughed herself silly. Loki watched as His friend enjoyed her breakfast. He finally swallowed His bite and wiped His mouth. “How’s your grits?” He asked. Raven nodded and gave an approving smile. “Ok, so now, with everything out of the way. I have something I want to tell you.” Raven said nothing and tilted her head in curiosity. “I know you’re not really the “party” type. I know the Halloween party was a lot for you.” He paused and wiggled His eyebrows and winked. Raven immediately turned red as she remembered that night. He laughed at her reaction “but I was hoping that maybe you’d be ok with a smaller gathering maybe?” He asked. Raven left her spoon in her bowl and shrugged “I don’t know Loki. It’s just this time of year is so…” Loki stopped her “I know, it’s hard for you BUT it’s not a Christmas gathering. A winter one. No Jingle Bells, no Here Come Santa Claus, no spiked punch. A small winter gathering with nothing but a warm fire, drinks, and food. And of course, whoever you want there. Me, you, Grim. Maybe Crow, Racheal and whatever idiot she’s dating now, and that old grandpa from that bookstore you love so much?” Raven thought about it for a bit “just something small right? And that “old grandpa” is Mr. Lee. He’s just lonely.” Loki smiled “See! All the more reason to do this. I see a lot of humans struggle this time of year. No party I promise.” Raven smiled defeated and shrugged her shoulders “ok, fine. A small winter gathering then. Where are you holding this gathering at?” she asked. Loki leaned back and thought about it. “I’ll figure it out and I’ll give you the details later.” Raven rolled her eyes. That meant it would be the last minute when she would get any information. “And no map to follow either! I almost didn’t make it to the house for Halloween. If it weren’t for Odin, I wouldn’t have made it. Your penmanship and artwork are terrible.” Loki acted dramatically wounded “your harsh criticism has shattered my artistic soul; I shall never create ever again.” Raven threw a blueberry at the dramatic ginger.

They finally finished their breakfast. Loki waved down their waitress Sandy who was coming back around to their table anyways. “What’cha need darlin’?” she asked, “I need the check.” She smiled and nodded “sure thing hun.” She left to retrieve it. Raven felt a tinge of guilt and Loki caught her troubled expression “no worries, Birdie, I offered.” He winked. Sandy returned with the little leather fold. Loki opened it and smiled slyly and took a piece of paper with something scribbled on it and stuffed it into His coat pocket. He paid the bill but before Sandy could leave Loki gave her a folded-up dollar bill. “For you.” He winked. She looked disgusted as Loki and Raven left the small diner. The waitress was about to spout off to a fellow server until she unfolded the “dollar bill” it was actually two fifty-dollar bills and in between them was a slip of paper that read “Happy Holidays.” Sandy’s eyes welled up with tears as she ran to try and stop Loki but both patrons were already long gone.

“So, where ya going Birdie?” Loki asked. Raven said nothing as she continued to walk down the icy sidewalk. She finally stopped at the edge of the street and Loki took her arm “you want some company?” Loki asked with a full toothy smile. She sighed “If You want to tag along You can but I’m sure You’ll get bored where I’m going.” Loki rolled His eyes “lemme guess the library or that ancient bookstore?” She playfully pushed Him away “I love that ancient bookstore. Besides I was hoping to find something specific.” Loki raised an eyebrow “a gift for someone?” Raven blushed and Loki chuckled “Ugh, you both are such nerds!” Loki thought for a second “If you’re gonna get Grim a book, why not get Him a joke book, He could use that.” Raven rolled her eyes. The pair crossed the street and made their way to the bookstore. They stopped outside “well this is where I get off. I have things to do and prep.” Loki said with a smile. They waved at each other, and she watched Loki vanish in a bright puff of smoke.

She entered the small dark bookstore. The tiny bell on the door rang as she entered and drew the attention of the short, stout older man tending to a bookshelf. He gave a warm, hearty greeting “Ah, my favorite little blackbird is back!” He went over and gave her a grandfatherly squeeze. She returned it and held him a little longer than normal. The man knew something was wrong, Raven only did that when she struggled with something. “My, dear are you alright? Would you like to talk about it?” She gave a grateful smile “just some trouble with my dad again, you know, same-same.” The man raised an eyebrow and wiggled his gray mustache. “I promise Mr. Lee, I am fine. Just this time of year…” Mr. Lee raised his hand “no, no Raven. I know. You don’t need to explain yourself further. Would you like some tea? I have the kettle on in the office.” he offered. She shook her head “I’m fine, but thank you. I actually just had breakfast with a friend. I don’t think I could eat or even drink anything else.” Mr. Lee patted Raven’s shoulders “well if you want a cup let me know. Is there anything you need me to get you specifically or are you going to browse a bit?” Raven looked around “well can you take me down to the “collections” there’s something I was hoping to find.” Mr. Lee smiled brightly “of course my dear.” The man felt around in his pockets and mumbled to himself. He motioned for Raven to follow him, and they went to his office. She stood by the door as he opened a drawer of his desk and picked out some keys. She followed Mr. Lee down to the basement. They passed the storage room and stopped at an old rusted green door. He unlocked the door and led Raven inside. The “collections” room was a sort of archive, but it would be more accurate to call it a museum. Mr. Lee was a well-traveled man had collected several hundreds of books and manuscripts from all over the world. There were all kinds of books stored here from old fairy and folk tales to even old academic material that was only bound together with some twine. There were tomes of all sorts scattered everywhere. The old must smell that hit Raven’s nose sent waves of happiness through her. She truly felt safe and comfortable there. She felt at home. Mr. Lee turned to Raven and smiled “the room is all yours, my dear. Just mind yourself around the scrolls and unbound books and use the steel ladder not the wooden one.” She laughed softly and the old man slapped his knee “of course I don’t think I need to remind you.” he said cheerfully and left Raven alone in the room.

Raven started to browse the nearest shelf. She wanted to get something for Odin. But what does one give a literal God? She knew He was interested in literature, but He didn’t strike her as someone who would like just any book. She knew that Odin was well-traveled and intelligent but there were some days where He was morose. When those days occurred, she would do anything to make Him smile. She hoped to find something that He might enjoy. She ran across some old texts; they looked like they were written in German; but the pictures depicted various animals. Perhaps an encyclopedia of some sort? She flipped through the pages of each book. She eventually abandoned them and moved on. She found some old Latin books, but she was sure these weren’t something He would want, the pages were covered in religious iconography. She left them and wandered around the mini museum. Her eyes finally fell upon a somewhat large leather-bound book that sat all alone on a shelf in the back. She walked over and pulled the book from its resting place; it had weight but was not burdensome. With a light grunt she moved it to a nearby table. She couldn’t read the words that were printed across its cover. She opened the book and skimmed its pages. She was surprised to find that the old tome was filled with multiple languages, dozens of them! Some pages even were in written what looked like Egyptian hieroglyphs!? The pictures that accompanied the texts were of animals, tools, plants, odd objects, and even paintings of locations. This book felt truly unique. She picked it up and held it close to her and rushed from the room. She found Mr. Lee helping a customer and waited for him to finish. When he was done, he spied the excided young woman with a book clutched to her chest. He smiled and walked over “that’s an interesting pick my dear. Whatever do you want with that?” Raven sat the tome down on the counter “what kind of book is this?” she asked. Mr. Lee took the glasses from his breast pocket and put them on “Let’s see.” he muttered. He opened it and flipped through a few pages. He made peculiar sounds as he skimmed through it. “If I recall the person who gave this book to me said it’s some kind of spell book.” he chuckled. “Some old woman claimed that she was the last of her bloodline and that this would find its way to a new witch. Something like Cornwall, Crumwell, or maybe Cromwell? Ah, can’t remember. Thought it was something odd, so I accepted it from her.” Raven looked down at the book “Mr. Lee is it for sale?” she asked, desperate for a yes. He raised an eyebrow. “Whatever do you want with that? It’s written in all manner of language; some I’m sure no longer exist!” Excitement welled up in Raven’s core. The old store owner saw the blatant happiness in her face, he smiled and sighed “for you blackbird. It’s free.”

She practically squealed and threw her hands around the old man and gave a hug. “Thank you, Mr. Lee! I don’t know what to say!” The man fixed his glasses “say nothing more dear, your smile is enough. And I couldn’t rid myself of that book by giving it away. No one seems interested in the occult anymore. Couldn’t even sell it as a novelty.” He shook his head and sighed “but if it gives you joy, then it’s not a waste of space.” He walked over to his office and fetched a box “don’t want that getting ruined now do we? You can put it in here and I’ll get a bag for you.” Raven placed the book gently into the box and closed it up. “This is such a neat find! I hope He likes it.” she thought to herself. She heard Mr. Lee come back with a black canvas bag “this seems to be the only one big enough. No worries about returning it. I have too many anyways.” He slid the box into the bag and handed it to Raven. “Was this all you came for?” He asked. She nodded “yes, but no worries I’ll be back soon.” Raven said as she grinned and headed to the exit. Outside the grey sky had become darker and small snow flurries began to fall. She didn’t where she would go but she didn’t feel like going home right now so she just walked. She passed many people who looked either tired or stressed. Some faces were darkened with anxiety or outright sadness. A few had smiles and wished her a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holidays to which she smiled and nodded. She finally made her way to a park. There were a few children at play which were a common sight here. The parents in town made their offspring play outside. Many of the adults here lauded the use of phones or video games. You would often hear them brag about taking some kind of device away and herding their children outside or you would hear the complaints that technology ruined what childhood was supposed to be. Raven found a bench and took a seat. She put the bag down and secured it with her feet. She reached for her phone to check the time. 1:15 “well it’s still early.” she thought to herself. She opened the message app and tapped on Crow’s name. She sent a short message and waited.

After a few minutes her phone chimed, and the screen lit up. He sent a text back.

Crow: ugh working still. Hbu?

Raven raised an eyebrow “he’s working on a Saturday?” she texted back

Raven: Working on a Saturday? I thought Donny closed on the weekends?

Crow: normally yea, but he needed to get orders out

Raven: oh ok. When do you get off?

Crow: at 3 why? Is something wrong?

Raven: I don’t want to go home right now.

Crow: fighting again?

Raven: Yeah…

Crow: did you try Racheal?

Raven: Not yet but I think she’s still out of town.

Crow: oh right she’s supposed to be visiting her grandparents or something right?

Raven: a funeral

Crow: oh…

Crow: well, I have to get back to work. I’ll call you when I get off

Raven sighed and put her phone away. She sat quietly for a while and watched as a few children played on the playground. Her mind wandered back to her childhood. She had recalled a few fond memories. One where she met the awkward Crow or Roy. She laughed when she remembered when he decided to call himself “Crow” he was sixteen and everyone thought he was going through a “phase” but the truth of it was that he just wanted to get closer with her. She thought it was odd that he changed his name for that reason, but she has never told him the real reason why she goes by “Raven” maybe one day she’ll tell him. The only other soul that knows why; her best friend, Racheal. The gentle flurries turned into a moderate snowfall. She turned her ruby eyes to the sky. A snowflake drifted and landed on her cheek. “I should find somewhere to go before this turns into something heavier” she thought. She stood and grabbed her bag and took off looking for shelter. She walked further and found herself at the High School. She stopped momentarily and recalled October’s event. Then for some inexplicable reason she felt as if her legs had a will of their own and she started to walk. As if guided by some unseen hand she crossed two streets and rounded a corner and found that she stood in front of the old Lafaye house. She shuddered at the sight. The horrible nightmare came rushing back and she nearly dropped the bag that held Odin’s gift. She stared up at the house. It seemed that the renovations that Loki had done did nothing to help improve the house’s unsettling aura. It still sat vacant, the for-sale sign laid on the lawn, no doubt from the previous party that was held there. Raven couldn’t tear her eyes away from the eerie dwelling. Something seemed to keep her gaze locked on the house. A shadow? No. A woman’s pale face appeared in an upstairs window and stared back at Raven with a sort of resentful look that lingered in the figure’s golden eyes. Raven’s body went cold. The face disappeared and Raven felt sure that whatever was in the window was going to come rushing out the door and at her. But still Raven was glued to the spot where she stood. Every instinct screamed “run, run, get away!” but she couldn’t make herself move.

A voice broke through her fear and snapped her from her terrified trance. “Little bird, what are you doing here?” the voice asked. Raven quickly spun around, and relief flooded through her when she saw who the voice belonged to. “Odin!” she exclaimed. Odin extended a black clad hand but instead of taking it she threw herself at Him. He staggered back and placed both hands on her head and comforted her. He was unsure why she was so anxious. “What has you upset?” He asked. Raven pulled away just enough and pointed to the house “there was a woman’s face in the window. She had golden eyes and..” Odin looked to the house but saw nothing. “There is no one there now. Perhaps someone snuck in…” His said, His response was unusually cold. Raven shook her head frantically “no, I swear there was a woman…” Odin interrupted her again “they are gone.” He said more sternly. Raven was confused at His sudden mood change. He seemed tense, more than usual. This mention of the woman seemed to make Him angry, so she changed the subject. She picked up her bag “Well anyways, I don’t know how I got here…I just walked here.” she said. Odin narrowed His eye. He gripped Raven’s hand and pulled her close “you do not need to be here.” She gasped at His sudden move. He conjured a mystic aura and they both vanished.

When the couple reappeared, they were in front of her house. Disappointment shadowed her face and she pulled away from Odin. He was surprised at her reaction. Had He offended her in some way? He was genuinely puzzled. Raven looked down at her bag and sighed “I suppose I can drop this off first. Wait here ok.” She said and left His side. Odin watched as she made her way to the front door. Something had told Him that maybe He should accompany her. Before Raven could take the doorknob, she felt someone by her side and turned. Odin stood next her, but He had traded His usual black garb for something more modern. A stylishly slick black suit. His long silver hair was styled to cover His missing eye and pulled into a low loose ponytail. She flushed and cast her face downward “c-could You have chosen something more casual.” Odin chuckled softly “oh? Is this too much?” Her head still turned away “I-uh…” Odin leaned closer to her “too much for who? You perhaps?” His words ringed seductively in her ear. She finally turned the knob and staggered inside. Odin chuckled and followed her in. She was greeted by the happy voices of two young girls of seven or eight. Both blue bright-eyed blondes. They were twins. Everything was identical about them right down to the manner of speech. Both wore holiday themed dresses, but one was dressed in blue while the other was dressed in green “Ravey! Ravey!” Look at what Mr. Summers brought for us!” one of the girls said as she held up a small water globe with a woman in an elaborate dress standing in the center. Raven knelt and looked at the gift. The other young girl held up a porcelain statue of a unicorn “He also gave us this too! Isn’t it pretty!” Raven nodded “they are both very pretty.” Realization that felt like a punch to the stomach twisted her in discomfort. “Mr. Summers” wasn’t in reference to her father but his younger brother.

The girls finally noticed Odin standing behind Raven and one pointed out “Ravey, is that your boyfriend from last time?” Raven stood and turned red “well, He’s a good friend.” she replied. The girl wearing blue nudged her sister “Laura, I bet she’s good friends with him like mama and her daddy.” Laura giggled mischievously “I bet she smooches him when they’re alone, huh Lacey” the girl in green said. “Ok, ok! We are very good friends.” The girls giggled and Raven crossed her arms. Odin smiled and took to Raven’s side. The twins giggled and ran off with their gifts. “Charming children and very observant.” He said teasingly. She rolled her eyes. “My, my is that little Erin!?” a cheerful, gruff voice rang out. Raven’s face adopted the disgusted look again. A rather short and stocky man had entered the room. He wore a red letterman jacket with the name of his former high school printed across the back, a green sweater underneath and a pair of heavy cargo pants. A black baseball cap hid his thinning hair. “Your father told me you were here visiting.” He approached her with wide arms, and she backed away. “Yeah, I’m here for a little while. Please I’d rather not Uncle Rudy.” Rudy stopped and frowned “aw, but I haven’t seen you in years, come on kiddo gimme a hug. I missed you!” He took a step forward and reached for her. Odin intervened and took the hand of the insistent man and gave a cool smile “My name is Alden.” Rudy stopped shocked; his face was wrought with jealously “Rudy.” He said flatly and shook Odin’s hand, it was a rather rough handshake, but “Alden” kept his smooth smile all the while. “So how do you know our sweet little Erin, Alden?” The man’s tone was abrasive. They let go and Odin turned to Raven, and she gave a nod. “We met while she was attending university. It was a Scandinavian exhibit at a local museum.” Rudy grumbled “yeah, you look like the museum type.” He then turned his attention back to Raven “Aw a museum really Erin? If you wanted quality, you should have phoned me. I got plenty of athletic buddies that would love to meet ya!” Raven shook her head “No, that’s ok. I’m not interested.” she said in the politest tone her soul could muster. He wrinkled his nose “really Erin? I brag about how smart, beautiful, and talented you are. A buddy of mine has a son your age, pro football player, I think you’d be perfect for him!” he exclaimed. “No, I said I’m not interested.” she repeated. Odin interrupted “Raven said she is not interested and frankly it is quite insensitive to her, trying to set her up in a relationship she has no interest in pursuing. I am asking you to stop.” Rudy’s pudgy face reddened, and his eyes bulged “you got some nerve pal. I’m only looking out for my niece. She needs a real man to take care of her. Not some boring, skinny little uptight girly-man!” Odin held His cool smile, but no emotion emanated from Him “Raven, does not need anyone to take care of her. She is an clever and intelligent young woman that can and has survived on her own without the support of a male figure. Though your definition of “taking care of” is outdated and most likely boils down to her being confined at home with children and waiting on her supposed husband to return so that he can be “serviced”, and she must be grateful that her “provides” for her while she swallows any dreams she had, does that sound right?” Odin’s provocation worked and Uncle Rudy charged at Odin with fists ready “I’ll show you, you bastard!”

Odin effortlessly sidestepped the attack, and the enraged man ran into a side table that held a potted plant and both crashed to the floor. The sound brought Raven’s father into the room from upstairs and panic filled her chest. She tugged on Odin’s arm, “perhaps we should go.” but it was too late Rudy picked himself up and tried to attack Odin again “Rudy!” Raven’s father yelled out “what the hell are you doing?” Rudy stopped and pointed at Odin “this asshole thinks he knows what’s best for our Erin!” Raven’s father followed the accusing finger and met Odin’s single blue eye. He sighed “oh, it’s you. Alden was it?” Odin nodded. “I remember you. You took her to that party on Halloween.” Odin nodded acknowledging his statement. “Come on Ed, you can’t approve of him…do you?” Rudy asked agitated. Raven’s father “Ed” walked over to Odin and extended a hand “My name is Edward and as you probably already know I am Erin’s father.” Odin took his hand and gave it a shake. “What university did you attend, Alden? The same as Erin I suppose?” Edward studied “Alden’s” face and knitted his brow “no, you look older than her. How did you two meet?” he asked. As Odin began to answer He was interrupted by Rudy “says that they met at some museum.” Edward shot Rudy an annoyed glance and the stocky man shrank. He found a chair nearby and sat down, his face was beet red. Raven hung in the background watched what was transpiring. She was shocked that her father had not tried to force Odin or “Alden” to leave. As a child she was never allowed to have anyone over. Not even Crow or Racheal. She would always either go to their houses or meet them somewhere. The ringtone on her phone played and she knelt and answered it quietly. “Hey Rave! I’m off work. You wanna talk?” It was Crow. “No, no, not now. I have to go I’ll call you back ok!” Then she hung up on him.

“Yes, I met Raven at a museum.” Odin said calmly. Edward sighed “she has you calling her that too?” Raven felt eyes on her, and she stood up. “When are you going to stop using that ridiculous name? Aren’t you a little old to..” He was interrupted by Odin “Raven is a fine name for her, it fits. I know her real name and I opt to use the one she likes and prefers. I see no reason to ridicule her for her name usage…” Raven’s eyes widened at His words. She was moved, she did not know what to do or say. She was rooted to the spot. She wanted to run to Him and thank Him for what He did. Not for defending her but “seeing” her. Odin continued “especially since.” He paused and glanced over to Raven and smiled “since I am sure you know full well why she uses that name. She has told me the reason and I would have assumed you would have more respect for her mother’s memory.” The last part of Odin’s speech hit a nerve and Edward turned red. “How dare you! You do not know anything about our family! It is something that she has to accept and grow up! Using a childish name like that does nothing to honor Karla’s memory!” Raven’s whole body went ice cold as she heard those words. Anger welled up in chest and she felt her head start to pound. How could he? How could he say that? Odin turned His gaze to Raven who now shook. He smiled. He knew she was about to burst. It was something she had to do. Raven wanted to scream at him, she wanted scream all that she held down for the last eighteen years. Eighteen years of anger, sorrow, and regret. Tears welled up in her eyes and they fell. She swallowed hard but the knot in her throat made it painful. She took in a few shaky breaths. When she finally decided to speak. Instead of an angry outburst her tone was unusually calm and soft. “Why would you say that dad? You don’t really care about the reason why I use “Raven” instead of my real name. In truth you never really cared about anyone other than yourself. You were never really around that much, but when you were…you still didn’t pay any attention to what was going on around you. Not me, not Jessi and not mom. Do you remember why I started using “Raven” instead of my own name?” Raven’s words caught her father off guard and made him think. He wrinkled his nose “was it about a book or something? Do you really expect me to remember.” His reply was dry and harsh. Raven let a small laugh escape her lips “It was because of mom. She would always call me her “silly little raven” she would always say how my hair would remind her of the ravens that flew about. Ravens were her favorite birds. That’s why I use the name.” The entire room went silent. It was so quiet that you could hear snow falling to the ground.

“I didn’t know Erin.” Edward finally replied after several minutes. “of course, you didn’t know. You’re the only one who didn’t know. Even Jessi knew.” Silence overtook the room again. Rudy shifted uncomfortably in his chair and then got up and left the room. “I’m going to take this up to my room and then I’m going to meet Crow.” she said as she picked up the bag and headed up to her room. Odin smiled and bowed His head a bit in a silent goodbye and followed Raven up to her room. She put the bag in her closet and sat down on the edge of her bed and hung her head. Odin entered “can you lock the door too please?” she asked without looking up. He did as asked of Him and took a seat next to her. He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close. “My, my little bird. You should be proud of yourself. I’ve never seen you handle yourself so gracefully before.” She shook her head. Her long dark hair covered her face. “Why do I care? Why does it…why does him not knowing me…hurt?” Odin sighed and thought to Himself. He chose His next words carefully and thoughtfully. “Because it is the fact that he is your father. He is the man that was supposed to raise and protect you. Like your mother, it was his job to help you grow…” Odin paused. For some reason these words stung at Him, but He continued “but instead he chose to neglect his duties as a parent in favor of his vanity.” Odin glanced over to Raven who now looked at Him with innocent eyes and tear-stained cheeks. He smiled and gently pressed His forehead to hers and began to hum a soft tune. She closed her eyes and listened; it sounded familiar. The soft melody made her picture mountain scenes and serene lakes. After a while her tears came to a stop, and she opened her eyes. She smiled “I think I’ve heard that before. I’m just not sure where.” He pulled away and took her by the hand “If I am not mistaken your friend Crow wanted to talk to you, correct?” Raven nodded “Yes, but..” Odin smiled “why don’t we go and meet him instead.” All she could do was nod and at that Odin pulled her close to Him and summoned a purple aura and they both vanished.

Raven decided to stay with Crow until Christmas had come and gone. She sat at the small kitchen table scrolling through her phone browsing the internet. Crow came from his room as he pulled on a heavy black jacket. “Hey, Raven you wanna come with me while I deliver these last boxes?” he asked. Without as much as a glance she shook her head “no, I think I’m gonna stay here. I’m don’t feel like going anywhere today.” Crow sighed “you haven’t left since Alden brought you over? Is everything ok?”  She looked up at Crow and frowned “ok, well I mean besides your dad and his creepy as fuck brother calling you constantly.” He paused “wait is this because you haven’t heard from Alden for the last two weeks? Why don’t you just call him?” Crow asked. Raven’s face was blank “he uh, he doesn’t have a phone.” Crow raised an eyebrow “you mean that this guy doesn’t have a phone in 2021? Does he at least have a computer? You could email him.” Raven shook her head “nope, no computer either.” Crow rolled his green eyes and laughed “does he live under a rock?” She giggled at his joke “no, he just doesn’t care much for technology is all.” Crow shrugged and ran his hand through his short platinum hair “well I’ll be back at like three-ish…I hope. Christmas is in two days, so shit is going to be hectic.” She bade farewell to her friend, and he left for work. She remained at the table browsing the internet for a while longer before she decided to take a nap. She plopped down on the old green sofa and fumbled for the remote. She clicked on a music streaming service and laid down to rest.

What seemed like hours later she was roused from her sleep by something that poked her face. She sat up in a panic and swung at whatever touched her face, her hand hit something warm and hairy. She rubbed her eyes and saw Loki on the floor, He laughed hysterically “you still have on Hel of a swing Birdie!” He sat up. His bright green eyes glowed as if he had something to share. Raven sighed “how did you get in here in the first place?” she asked, looking at the front door. Loki giggled “oh, please no locks could ever keep me out.” He said confidently. Raven clicked off the music and got off the couch and headed for the small kitchen. Loki picked Himself up and followed her. He headed right for the refrigerator. “So, I stopped by to tell you that the little meet up will be on the twenty-seventh.” He said with His head in the fridge. He pulled out a small glass container that had some dark cubes in it. “Ooo is that fudge!” He said gleefully as He closed the door. Raven waited for the old coffee machine to perk. “Well at least it’s after Christmas. So that’s nice. Where at though?” Loki didn’t hear her question as He stuffed a dark square into His mouth and moaned as He chewed. Raven shook her head at the ridiculous sight. “Oh, yeah. That’s some good fudge!” He practically gasped. “Need a minute alone?” Raven asked sarcastically. Loki grinned “yes, I just might.” She laughed and took the container from Him and put it on the counter. “Where is this gathering supposed to be?” she asked again. Loki gazed longingly at the chocolatey treats. “Out at Logan’s Grove. Can I have chocolate now!” Raven raised an eyebrow “Why there? There are rumors that it’s haunted or something like that, screams coming from the woods.” Loki shrugged “already checked that place from top to bottom. Rumors are all it is. There are no ghosts or monsters hiding.” Raven handed Loki the container of confections “here You sweets crazed doofus. Old Mrs. Penny made it.” Loki took another piece and shoved it into His mouth. “Tell old lady Penny that these are amazing!” He said with a mouth full. Raven giggled and retrieved a mug from the nearby cabinet. “Well, I’m gonna go. I have lots to do! See ya later Birdie!” and Loki vanished. Raven looked around “no, clock.” She fixed her cup of coffee and headed back to the couch. She picked up her phone and the time read two thirty-four. She made herself comfortable and switched on a holiday show.

Christmas had come and gone. Raven had stopped by the house that day. There wasn’t much of a difference. Joanna being pushy as ever, an argument with her father, Uncle Rudy being an obnoxious jerk, trying to set her up with his athletic friends. The only time that was peaceful was when she baked cookies with Laura and Lacey when everyone went out. It seemed like a normal thing for the two young girls to be left alone with someone. It was the day of Loki’s “special” gathering. Raven looked down at the package she held. It was Odin’s gift. It was wrapped in shiny black paper topped with a white glittery bow. She found it amusing that the only wrapping paper they had was black. She held the gift close to her. She did not want to lose it or get it ruined. It was the twilight hours, and she made her way to Logan’s Grove. It was an area that was notorious for alleged hauntings. But as Loki told her there was nothing there. She hurried on. Passing houses and crossing streets. She took care not to slide on the ice that formed on parts of the sidewalks. Twenty or so minutes passed, and she found herself at the entrance of the grove. Night had finally engulfed the light and she stood under the streetlights. People that passed by gave her curious looks but kept walking. Raven sighed and started into the grove.

The moonlight blanketed everything in a silvery light. One would think that the light might bring some comfort but instead it added a layer of eeriness to the whole place. Raven had no idea where she was going. She stopped “hey Loki! You there!?” Silence was what responded. She looked around and there was not a soul to be seen. She took to a tree and leaned against it and sighed. She put Odin’s gift between her knees and pulled out her phone. She scrolled down to “Russell” and sent a text message. She waited but received no reply. “Of course not.” she thought to herself with an eyeroll. She tried sending a message to Crow and waited for a reply and again she received none. She groaned in frustration. Raven put her phone away and took the package from her knees and started to walk again. A light breeze stirred and nipped at her nose and cheeks. As she walked Raven felt eyes on her. They felt as if they were in the trees, and she was sure that something had started to follow her. She picked up her pace, she went from a brisk walk to a light jog. She didn’t look back and kept jogging. A shadow shot from the corner of her eye, and she stopped. The shadow bounced around just on the edge of her vision. She waited for the shadow to halt and when it did, she ran, and it chased after her.

She ran as fast as her legs could carry her. Though it was faint Raven swore she heard laughter echoing around her. She finally came to a large oak tree, and she stopped. She heaved and dropped to her knees. Her legs could no longer carry her. Out of breath and terrified she felt an unknown presence at her back. The laughter had finally ceased, and silence reigned once more. Raven was too scared to look behind her, she didn’t want to see what terrible thing lurked behind her. She braced for an attack. But nothing. She set the wrapped gift aside and tried to stand. Her legs wobbled and shook. She slowly turned around and found nobody and nothing there. She looked around and found no trace of an animal or even a person. There was only one set of footprints and they belonged to her. She laughed at herself and shook her head “good grief Raven what is wrong with you?” She went over and picked up the gift and wiped the snow off it. She gazed up at the oak tree and walked around behind it. “Loki!” she called out, but no one answered her. The shadow that chased her and Loki not answering her left her unnerved. She came back around to the front of the tree. Raven decided to head back to the street and then call someone. As she walked, she thought she heard an extra pair of feet follow her. She turned and found nothing. After a few long minutes she found herself back at the large oak tree. “What the hell is going on here!?” she screamed at the night sky. The awful laughter rang out again. For some reason it sounded familiar. When she brought her gaze down to the base of the tree, she was met with an incredibly unsettling sight. It was a woman’s pale face. The same face Raven saw in the window of the Lafaye house. Her eyes widened and she backed up slowly. The face wore a most ominous smile. It never looked away from Raven. The face looked as if it were stuck in the trunk of the tree. But it started to slowly move forward and from the tree the rest of the body emerged. A dark slender body with long gangly limbs that were draped in a thin translucent cloth. Raven felt as if she had seen this creature before. Was it a movie, a game or maybe a nightmare? Raven’s entire being shook, from her arms to her legs. The “woman’s” face twisted into something horrifying.

Raven was convinced that this had to be a nightmare. There was no way that this creature could exist, no rational explanation whatsoever. As the creature approached her it stretched a long slender arm at her and pointed with a bony finger. It opened its grotesque mouth and the words “give me.” tumbled from its open gap. Raven continued to take steps backward. She wanted to run but was too terrified to turn her back on this thing. Again, it said, “give me.” Raven didn’t understand. What did it want? Odin’s book? “What-what do you want!” she screamed at it. The monster let its arm fall “body.” It croaked out in a hoarse, dry voice. Raven went cold. Body? Did it mean her body? Memories of October rushed back and then the nightmare. She couldn’t believe this! Was this the thing in the house? She finally gathered up enough courage to finally turn and run. The thing gave chase. It wasn’t long before a terrible shriek rang out and she stopped. She turned and saw Him. He stood over the corpse of the creature. It was Odin. His spear had pierced the creature’s chest. Raven walked slowly over to Him. Their eyes met and she dropped the package and ran to Him. She flung her arms around Him and hugged Him. He returned the embrace with one arm. She let go of Him “what-what was that-that thing!?” she asked. Odin was silent. Raven looked down at the creature and it began to deteriorate and melt into the snow leaving only Odin’s spear lodged in the ground. Odin pulled His weapon from its spot and sent it away with a wave of His hand. The weapon burst into light and vanished. He finally spoke “something conjured by an obviously experienced spellcaster.”  Odin seemed lost in thought. Raven left His side to retrieve the gift she dropped and returned to His side. “This place has a reputation for being haunted. People say they hear screams and see eyes floating in the trees at night.” Raven explained further “this place is also rumored to be cursed too, but I’m not sure why though. Loki did say that He checked this place out and all the allegations of hauntings and curses were just rumors.” Odin held His chin and contemplated the creature’s sudden appearance as well as Raven’s words. There was definitely magic afoot. He sensed the same presence nearby that He did last Halloween. Odin turned His attention to the large oak tree that sat in the small clearing. He walked over to it and placed a hand on the trunk and closed His eye. “A ley line” He muttered softly to Himself. “Explains how they were able to send that thing here. Whoever it is, is using sorcery. But what kind? It wasn’t Vanir magic nor was it Elven. The creature wasn’t an illusion so that also rules out both Dwarven and Jotun magic. Perhaps a new type of sorcery?” Odin stood there for several minutes, still as a statue. Raven grew concerned and reached out and gently touched the God’s shoulder and He opened His eye. “Are You ok Odin?” she asked. He shook the thoughts and smiled at Raven. “Little bird…” His voice faded at the end.

He thought for a moment that He had glimpsed the face of His beloved Muninn again in Raven’s concern. She tilted her head “are You sure You’re alright. You’re acting a bit strange.” He smiled and caressed Her cheek “I am fine.” He reassured her. “If I recall I came looking for you. Everybody is waiting for you little bird.” She laughed quietly and looked down at the wrapped parcel she held. It was wet and covered in snow and dirt. “Shall we go, little bird?” He finally asked. She nodded. He gently grasped her forearm and pulled her in close and they vanished in a vortex of purple and red light. They reappeared near a large campsite. He let go of Raven and she left His side. She saw a bright fire glowing, and figures gathered around it. Some standing and some sitting. Cheerful chatter could be heard as well as soft music. Raven sighed “I thought Loki said just something small.” Odin heard this comment slip and He only smiled. He took her by the hand and led her to the gathering. “I have found the little bird, she seemed to have gotten lost.” Odin said with a chuckle. Raven rolled her eyes. Loki was seated on a stool and hopped from His seat. “Birdie!” He said happily “you made it! Good thing Grim decided to go find you. Wouldn’t want to miss your surprise, would you?” Raven looked around “You promised a small gathering.” Loki nodded “I did. There are a few people here, but you know them. Not like the Halloween party.” He chortled. Crow waved to Raven with a smile. She saw Mr. Lee and his nephew Joe. She saw another familiar face. It was Sandy, the sweet waitress from the diner. Raven smiled waved to her and the woman waved erratically back and nearly spilled her drink. Raven looked around. Her smile faded when she noticed someone was missing. Loki winked at Odin and He gave a nod. “Little bird, what is that you hold?’ He asked curiously. Raven looked down “oh this. Um…I got You a gift. I wanted to give this to You on Christmas, but You never showed up.” This was just merely a distraction so that Loki could bring out Raven’s “surprise”

“I’m sorry that it’s a little dirty though.” she said. She held out the package to Odin. As He was about to take it Loki interrupted them. “Oh Birdie! There is someone here to see you!” He exclaimed loudly. Raven turned her head and saw Racheal walk from behind Loki. Raven’s face lit up “Racheal!” She waved excitedly at her friend. She looked to Odin and He took the gift from her and urged her to see her friend. Raven hurried to Racheal, and they hugged each other. “I thought you were still out of town.” Raven said. Her friend chuckled “I came back just before Christmas. I got a call from Russell, and he explained what he wanted to do. So, I never told you I came home. I’m sorry.” Raven shook her head “Its ok.”  The two friends talked for several minutes before a man interrupted them. He practically shoved a can in Raven’s hands “hey there, you must be Raven. Rache talks an awful lot about you. Makes me kind of jealous sometimes.” he laughed. “Rave, this is Lance.” Racheal introduced him. Raven gave a half smile and excused herself from the “couple” She went over and greeted Mr. Lee and his nephew. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. Then she made her way to Crow. She put the can down on a stump “So, this better than the Halloween party?” he asked with a slight tease in his voice. She playfully shoved him, and he laughed. “It’s fine.” she said. She took a seat in a chair. Crow followed her gaze to Odin. “So, uh Raven. Are you like in love with that guy?” He finally spoke up. The question caught her off guard. “Um, well. It’s kind of complicated.” Crow raised an eyebrow. “Complicated?  We all see how you act, how you look at him. You talk about him all the time, you’re always with him and Russ has even hinted that you two…” Raven didn’t look at her friend. She knew he was right. She felt it deep in her chest but couldn’t bring herself to admit it. Crow chuckled softly” why not just go to him then?” Raven shook her head. Crow put a hand on her head and gently turned it to face him. His expression serious “Go. To. Him.” he said again. Raven was shocked by how serious her friend was. “But…” Crow let go of her head “Don’t worry about me or anyone else. Just go. I can see that you want to be with him. He makes you happy, any moron can see that.” Raven smiled and stood “are you…?” Crow practically pushed her in Odin’s direction. She took a few steps and looked back, and Crow made a shooing motion with one hand. She smiled and nodded and went to Odin. Crow sighed “Raven, why can’t you just be true to yourself. Just admit…” his thought was interrupted by “Russell” when he threw an arm around his shoulders and shoved a hot dog in his hand. Loki or “Russell” followed Crow’s gaze to Raven and Odin standing together. “So, Crow why not join us for some grub and tunes. Racheal’s new squeeze just pulled out a fucking banjo.” Loki laughed. Crow nodded and the pair joined the others around the fire.

Odin still held the wrapped package in His hands, He stared at the once shiny black paper that adorned it. “You haven’t opened it yet?” Raven asked. Odin shook His head “I thought I would wait for you.” Raven flushed a bright red. Odin began to peel away the paper and revealed a box. He glanced at Raven, and she smiled. He effortlessly tore through the adhesives that kept the box flaps closed. An expression rose to His face, one that Raven had never seen before. It was a mixture of happiness, curiosity, and surprise. Raven reached out and took the box and Odin held the large, old tome in His hands. He opened it and flipped through. A few times He stopped to either read or look over something that caught His attention. He closed the book and looked at Raven. A smile formed on His lips “little bird this is a most thoughtful gift. Wherever did you find this?” She glanced over in Mr. Lee’s direction “Mr. Lee the bookstore owner. He has a kind of museum or vault with really old books. I asked if I could have this.” Odin looked down at the tome again “perhaps you can show Me this place sometime.” He said, His voice low. Raven nodded. Odin placed the book back in the box and took it from Raven’s hands. He sat it down near a tree. Raven took ahold of His hand and Odin curled His fingers around hers. Raven felt gooseflesh surge across her skin. It was rare for Odin to perform such an action. He pulled her close to Him “I might not be able to change the feelings you hold for this season nor erase the unfortunate memories you have gathered. But I can help you make new ones.” He whispered in her ear. Tears welled up in her eyes “Odin… I” She was cut off by His soft warm lips that pressed against hers. She closed her eyes and let herself fall into it. She felt arms around her waist, and she moved her own arms to His neck. A purple aura swirled around the couple; it bloomed then burst leaving only black feathers drifting from the sky.

Crow looked up from his paper plate and noticed that Raven and “Alden” were gone. “Hey where did Rave and Alden go?” Crow asked. Loki grumbled. He was busy flirting with Sandy. He finally turned from the woman. “I don’t know. Probably in the woods, for more “privacy” Loki went back to His flirting. Crow went over to the spot where the couple had been. He found the open box and book. He knelt “Oh, it’s that book Rave got for Alden.” He stood and picked up the box “I don’t think they would want this getting lost or ruined.” he said to himself. As he walked back to the bonfire Crow swore, he heard a laugh and spun around. There was no one there. He shrugged and continued to walk. He reached the warmth of the fire and sat the box down near a cooler. He joined with the others. Something cold landed on his cheek and he looked to the sky. Snow flurries gently drifted down from the heavens; Crow smiled “I hope you’re enjoying your holiday this year…Erin.”
